Our take
Written Sep 30, 2026GPT-5 is a hosted-only model: we list no download for it, so using it means choosing a host. It reads text, images and files in one request, and its Arena placings sit mid-field rather than at the top.
Reach for it when your question arrives with a document or a screenshot attached and you want one hosted model to read all of it, or when your team already works inside OpenAI or Azure and would rather not run anything itself. Its coding result is a task-completion measure rather than a preference vote, which makes it the more useful of the two signals here. Skip it if you need a model you can download and run on your own hardware, or if you need top-of-board measured quality.
The case for it
- Text, images and files go into the same request, so a screenshot or a document does not have to be retyped as a prompt first.
- 18th of 42 on SWE-bench Verified as of 19 Feb 2026, which measures the share of real GitHub issues resolved end-to-end rather than which answer people preferred.
- OpenRouter, Azure and OpenAI all list the same headline rate, so at the base rate the host you pick is not a price decision.
The case against it
- 72nd of 168 on Arena Text (overall) and 82nd of 168 on Arena Coding as of 25 Sep 2026 — these record which answer people preferred, not whether it was correct.
- We list no download for it, so every route we hold is a hosted offer and your prompts leave your machine.
- The coding evidence is a single dated run, and nothing supplied measures reasoning or maths outside the Arena preference boards.

What each host's API supports
From the parameter list each endpoint publishes. Streaming is omitted: nothing we hold reports it, for any model.
