Our take
Written Aug 3, 2026Claude Opus 4.1 is Anthropic's flagship hosted-only reasoning model with a 200,000-token working memory and measured strengths in coding and instruction following. It accepts text, images and files, but carries a premium price tag with no budget tier available.
Choose this when you need a model whose measured coding skill is the highest in its own suite, or for long-context work with 200,000 tokens of working memory. Use it for enterprise deployments that require file, image and text input in a single proprietary model. Skip it if you need strong maths performance, want to self-host or fine-tune, or if your budget cannot stretch to a premium tier with no cheaper variant.
The case for it
- Coding is the standout skill relative to its own benchmark profile: a 63.5-point gap above its overall text score, the largest positive spread in its skill set.
- Consistently strong at following complex instructions, with its second-highest measured skill in this area.
- Uniformly priced across all six providers, so there is no price arbitrage to hunt.
- Fastest measured throughput on Google Vertex, at 23 tokens per second.
The case against it
- Maths is the weakest skill in its own benchmark suite, with a 68.9-point gap below its coding score and a second run even lower.
- Throughput is highly variable and poor on one major cloud endpoint, an 11.5-fold difference within the same provider family.
- No downloadable weights or fine-tuning access; proprietary and hosted only.

Nobody we watch has scored Claude Opus 4.1 for this. We would take the rating from Arena Agent (IPS).
WritingWe do not rate this
Two boards come close and neither tests writing: Arena Creative Writing asks people which of two replies they prefer, and LiveBench Language tests whether a model understood a passage. So we show where Claude Opus 4.1 placed and give it no mark out of five.
These tests check whether a model follows instructions — a precondition for all the work above, but not a measure of how well that work is done, which is why they get no rating.

Or rent it from someone else
Why this differs from the header. The strip above quotes Anthropic's own list price. This is the cheapest live offer at the widest standard context we hold, whoever is serving it — a reseller undercutting a lab is ordinary commerce, not an error.
